Thomas Smillie (1890–1913)

Current Project:
I am currently building a multi-case exhibit highlighting Cincinnati's Brewing History using historical newspapers, ephemera, and other local history resources.

Most Recently Finished Project:
I just finished designing classes for library patrons to teach research skills, assist with genealogy searches, and educate patrons about the Cincinnati Public Library’s holdings.

Inspiration:
I am regularly inspired by the great literary and research works of those around me and before me. I also take a lot of inspiration from the art and chaos in my communities.

Goal:
My goal is to empower library users to learn and build their own communities by using and expanding the common goods libraries offer.

Approach:
My approach to projects and my work in general is collaborative and research-heavy, using the resources at my disposal and exploring what already exists to build on.

PDF of SAA Advocacy Letter

Featured is a letter I wrote to the Society of American Archivists on the importance of reconciling past omissions in archives and building policies to support the restoration and protection of minority voices through both traditional and non-traditional means, highlighting the need to increase the recording and acceptance of oral histories in traditional archives.

Database Instruction
and Guidesheets

PDF links on individual project titles
Featured here are guide sheets I have built for common genealogy, newspaper, and research databases.
I use many of them for genealogy and database classes I teach to library staff and patrons.

Ancestry
Designed for use in a database class I teach, this guide sheet focuses on the basic functions of Ancestry as well as the built-in tools and research guides.

CHPL Digital Library

As the only in-house-run database for CHPL, the Digital Library holds all scanned material for the whole system. This database is designed to aid in searching and navigating the library as well as highlight some more popular collections.

CHPL Newspaper Databases

Designed to be taught alongside genealogy classes for patrons, this guide sheet focuses on common uses for three common newspaper databases provided by CHPL.

Family Search
Designed for at-home and consistent use of this genealogy database, this guide sheet aims to teach patrons general use as well as advanced features.

Harnessing Google
Made to turn Google into a powerful research tool, this guide sheet teaches users the built-in reference tools provided through a simple search engine.

Heritage Quest
Built for a genealogy class as an introduction to accessing and using a genealogy database, allowing library users to conduct research at home.

ProQuest: African American Heritage
Designed to aid in genealogy research, this guide sheet has become especially useful in its ability to assist in the often difficult task of African American family research.

Research Design: An Investigation of Database Use Experience by Public Library Reference Staff

PDF of Research Proposal
Attached is a research plan I designed to gauge the usage of databases and the potential database needs of public library reference staff. This proposal was designed with the intention of better supporting reference staff through tools and training, as well as building a best practice for the utilization of limited library funds to optimize public services provided. The proposal features a detailed explanation of the cause, project timeline, and appendices to be used in data collection and interview processes.
